DATA DIVE: 2023 Legislative Polling Hi everyone. Last week the governor released his school safety legislation. The legislation is a bipartisan winner with voters - 71% support - and it received widespread coverage. In fact, find some coverage on this handy Youtube playlist that was created: Safer and Supportive Schools Act Coverage. The governor continues his education theme this week, and let's look at how the public views this new piece of legislation. A reminder that this survey was completed Feb 21-26 by Dave Sackett and is 600 "likely" registered voters.
Issue PollingThe Education Achievement, Opportunity, and Accountability bill is the next bill that Governor Lombardo has introduced. We polled three main pieces of this legislation; here are the questions and the results: School choice gives parents the right to use the tax dollars designated for their child’s education to send their child to the public or private school which best serves their needs. Generally speaking, would you say you favor or oppose the concept of school choice? Support 70%, Oppose 27% School choice is not only popular; it has bipartisan and broad support across all demographics in Nevada. The highest support comes from Hispanic and Black voters coming in 74% and 81%, respectively. An equal 70% of both men and women support school choice. This legislation is not only popular, it is a unifying issue. Expanding opportunity scholarships to allow families making less than $150,000 a year to access funds to move their child to any school of their choice including private schools. Support 68%, Oppose 28% Again, we have another issue that receives widespread, bipartisan support. 79% of Black voters, 75% of Hispanic voters, 78% of Hispanic women, 78% amongst 18-34 year olds, 72% of Independents, 71% of ticket splitters, 70% amongst those that say education is their top issue - in short virtually no one opposes this policy. Requiring that all school students be able to read by the third grade, and holding them back and not promoting them if they cannot so they can receive the extra attention they need to be able to read and progress. Support 84%, Oppose 13% This is the highest testing policy I can ever remember testing. 89% amongst Hispanic voters, with literally 100% of Hispanic Independents in support. 78% of Black voters, 88% of White women, 97% of Hispanic men, 83% of Hispanic women, 87% of women that live in the Reno DMA, 80% of college-educated women, and 94% of voters that classify themselves as soft democrats support the legislation. The governor's legislation is hugely popular and would help Nevada's education system, and, as a bonus, it's a vote-getter for legislators. Hard to imagine how Democrat legislators can oppose these extremely popular reforms. Voters will be watching. |
