DATA DIVE: 2023 Legislative Polling

Hi everyone, we're back for a midweek data dive! I decided to get your more numbers this week after reading a breathless press release, on the governor's election reform bill, from the Nevada Democratic Party Chair and Assemblywoman Daniele Monroe-Moreno. Of course, I'm not knocking them for sending a release like that - hey that's what parties do! - but it served as an excellent opportunity to ensure the record reflects the actual views of all Nevada voters.

So with that intro, here is actual data about how Nevada voters feel about the governor's legislation.

Issue Polling

So, let's start with ending universal mail ballots. We asked the voters the following question:

Repeal the law that was passed in 2021 that requires the state of Nevada to automatically mail a ballot to all registered voters in the state of Nevada, regardless of whether they want a ballot or not.  This costs the state $12 million of taxpayer money and has not increased voter participations.

Support 56%, Oppose 40%

A majority of Nevadans, 61% of Nonpartisans, and 56% of Hispanic voters want to end universal mail balloting. And when given the information that this wouldn't change early voting or Election Day opportunities then support goes even higher:

Support 75%, Oppose 23%

Next, voters are tired of Nevada looking foolish because we are unable to get results to our elections in for days after the fact.

Putting an end to the endless “dragging on” of election results counting by requiring that ballots must be received by the Registrars by five o’clock pm on election day – rather than the four days after the election is over.

Support 60%, Oppose 37%

This is another policy that is popular with voters because it's common sense. 59% of Hispanic voters, 61% of Nonpartisans, 65% of ticket splitters, 60% amongst females.

Now, time for my favorite result, what do Nevadans think about voter ID:

Requiring a photo ID when voting in-person and requiring voter verification when voting by mail in Nevada elections.

Support 77%, Oppose 21%

56% of Female Democrats support, 82% of Nonpartisans, 68% of black voters, 80% of hispanics, 77% of white voters, 78% of 18-34 year olds, 77% of seniors, 84% of ticket splitters, 71% of moderates, 71% of college grads, 73% of union households. This policy had the 2nd highest support of any issue that we tested.

Voters stand with Joe Lombardo on these issues, and while Democrats have called these 'non-starters' perhaps voters will have the final say.
